About Us
Mission Statement
The SCHS was established to preserve the record of human endeavor in Steuben County for the enjoyment and edification of its people and of those generations yet to come. Specifically, the Society is to collect, catalog, and preserve historical artifacts, archival items, books, and other published material relating to the history of Steuben County. The Society seeks to make its collections relevant to the public through exhibits, lectures, school class visitations, special events, and publications.
Our Story
The Steuben County Historical Society started in 1949 as a community organization with no physical space. In 1964 the SCHS was officially chartered by the Regents of the State University of New York and was given Non-Profit status. In 1974 the Society started the Steuben Echoes newsletter, a quarterly publication sharing all the historical stories and interesting news about the organization's projects and events. Fifty years later that same newsletter has invited members of the society to explore our common history in order to compare with the past and inform our future. Despite the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic our society has grown with support it recieves from memberships, volunteering, and most importantly, the public's interest in the county history.
