The purpose of the Steuben County Historian's Office is to collect, preserve, and promote history and research for future generations. The office archive includes genealogy, obituaries, newspaper files, cemetery records, maps, photographs, books, probates to wills, copies of land records, et. Al.

The Steuben County Historian's Office was created on April 17, 1944 by act of the legislature, in accordance with NYS Arts and Cultural Affairs Law, Section 57.07 - Local Government Historian Law. Since then the County Historian is the primary historian official for the County, and represents all residents, businesses, and organizations relating to history.

Major projects include: Steuben County Museum Trail; Steuben County Hall of Fame.
